Green Roofs – Worth It?

The many concrete buildings and structures we have been erecting since the beginning of the industrial revolution are not only some of the most polluting structures but some of the most drab and lifeless we have ever come up with. In an effort to bring more green into our city’s, planners and building administrators are studying the feasibility of green roofs or gardens that allows the green to return while we keep our concrete jungle below. Property owners have been finding that developments besides such green roofs are more favorable and clients often haggle for a view of such structures. Plants and the color green itself has a soothing effect on our eyes calming our souls and helping regulate the heat in our concrete jungle. They also offer a soothing place for a stroll after breaks where one can simply read a book or just hang out, lost amidst a green island amidst the concrete jungle.
Just like the famed central park of Manhattan, all green roofs are made possible with high-tech planting technologies such as lighter planting medium and drainage systems. Soil is one of the most vital plant need which we have developed into more stable artificial materials that mimics its abilities. Water management is also an issue where plants are good at, absorbing tons of water that would otherwise have gone into the drains overwhelming the city’s water treatment plants. Man and plants can indeed live harminiously each benefitting the other as we work to mend our destructive ways.
